Triple Digit Temperatures In NJ...Keeping Your House Cooler

It's Hot Outside, and in New Jersey they're predicting a week of what we call the 3Hs.....HAZY, HOT AND HUMID.
Here are a few suggestions for keeping your house comfortable during hot spells like this.
  • 1. Do not turn your central air conditioning off if you leave the house during the day. If you do want to conserve on resources and energy costs, raise the temperature ever so slightly, but keep in mind that your system will have to work that much harder to get back to the temperature you desire.
  • 2. Keep draperies, blinds, or shades closed so that the sun won't penetrate the room increasing the temperature and making it that much harder for the air conditioning system to maintain temperature.
  • 3. Run your dishwasher in the evening so that you don't heat up your kitchen during the sunlight hours. (using your oven on a hot day like we're describing might not be a good idea either!)
  • 4. Be sure you've changed your filter. A clogged filter will restrict airflow and result in poor cooling
  • 5. Hydrate yourself....drink lots of cold water and be mindful that your pets will need extra water too.
  • 6. While we're on the subject of hydrating, remember your plants inside the home and those outside as well and give them all an extra drink.
Lowering your thermostat to unrealistic temperatures won't do much good. Air conditioning systems are designed to maintain an ambient temperature differential. Depending on the design of your system, it may be working as best it can, particularly if your system is old and inefficient. (Time for new equipment?)

Do you see ice outside at the air conditioning condensing unit and feel the air inside is not cool? You've got a frozen system, Turn your system off and call your HVAC Contractor.
